A Story Jesus Told

The Pharisee & the Tax Collector

From the Gospel of Luke

One — Going to Pray

Two men walked up to the temple to pray. One tall and confident. One small and quiet.

Two — Look at Me
I fast twice a week... I give money... I do everything right!

The Pharisee stood at the front, arms raised. "I do everything right," he told God, listing his good deeds.

Three — Have Mercy on Me
God, have mercy on me a sinner.

Far at the back, the tax collector wouldn't look up. "God, have mercy on me — a sinner."

Four — Going Home

Jesus said: the tax collector went home loved and heard. A humble prayer reaches further than a proud one.

A Small Question

Which man would you
rather be like?

God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
